　　电脑科技的发展体现在社会生活的方方面面，教育作为创造智慧的第一生产线也受到了这种普遍趋势的影响。笔记本电脑已经悄悄进军大学校园。

　　Laptop computers are popular all over theworld. People use them everywhere. They connectpeople to their work place. In the United Statestoday, laptops also connect students to theirclassrooms.

　　Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptopcomputer program allowing students to studyschoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years,each of the 1500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are a part of a $10million computer program at Westlake. Students with laptops will also have access to theInternet.In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers,classmates, or families.However, the most important part of the program is that students willbe able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it anywhere theylike!

　　Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education isworkable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers.In addition, portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but alsolibraries and other resources. State higher education officials are studying how laptops can helpstudents.

　　At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff uses the computers. The laptops willallow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we arein the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can seeeverything and do everything.”
