　　A rapid means of long-distance transportationbecame a necessity for the United States assettlement (新拓居地)spread over farther westward. The early trains were impractical curiosities,and fora long time the railroad companies met withtroublesome mechanical problems. The mostserious ones were the construction of rails able tobear the load*and the development of asafe,effective stopping system. Once these were solved?the railroad was established as thebest means of land transportation.
