　　Fish is an indispensable dish for the Spring Festival Eve dinner, because “fish” sounds like “surplus” or “abundant” in Chinese. Because of this symbolic meaning, fish is given to relatives and friends as gifts during the Spring Festival. It is said that the symbolic meaning of fish originated from traditional Chinese culture. Chinese people have the tradition of thrift. They think that the more they save, the safer they feel. Today, although people are getting richer, they still believe that thrift is a praiseworthy virtue.
